SAT Preparation Course

Instructor:

Mr. John Casey Vear has developed and taught SAT preparation courses for over ten years at American and International high schools. He has worked for the Educational Testing Service as a Test Center Supervisor for the GMAT and TOEFL programs. Mr. Vear has twenty years of teaching experience and currently teaches Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry at Bishop Alemany High School.

John has a B.A. from Dartmouth College, an M.A. from Michigan State University, and a California teaching credential in both Math and English.

SAT Reasoning Test Preparation Course

This course will prepare students for the new SAT Reasoning Test.

  • Students will learn the structure of the test, including the specific question types in the Critical Reading, Math, and Writing sections.
  • Students will learn strategies for each of the different question types as well as general test-taking approaches.
  • Students will review and practice the most essential math, reading, and writing skills and concepts through sets of practice questions and essays.
  • Students will take practice exams under test conditions on a daily basis. The course will include the following topics in:


Critical Reading

  • Approaches to sentence completion questions
  • Vocabulary development
  • Types of reading passages and passage-based reading questions
  • Approaches to reading the passages and answering the questions
  • Strategies for eliminating choices and making an educated guess


Writing

  • Approaches to identifying sentence errors
  • Selected grammar review
  • Approaches to improving sentences and paragraphs
  • Deciding your viewpoint to the essay prompt and managing the time allotted for the essay
  • How to structure your essay
  • How to choose language that gives the reader clear and vivid images that support your viewpoint


Math

  • Number operations and properties
  • Averages, rates, ratios, percents
  • Exponents and roots
  • Basic and advanced Algebra
  • Word problems
  • Lines and angles
  • Triangles and quadrilaterals
  • Circles, combined figures, solids
  • Graphs and coordinate geometry
