Mission Hills, California (February 5th, 2011). The results are now official; the Bishop Alemany Warriors won FIRST PLACE in the Southern California Private Schools Regional Academic Decathlon and have earned the right to compete in the “STATE COMPETITION” to be held in Sacramento March 11th thru the 15th. The Warriors took top overall score out of 30 teams, highest scoring student, and top three students in the super quiz as well as top score in the super quiz.
Bishop Alemany scored 39,268 out of a possible 60,000 points to secure their 12 title overall. Second place went to St. Francis of La Canada with 37, 820 and third place went to Mater Dei of Santa Ana with 33,536. The Top Scoring individual decathlete was Kevin Pamaran from Bishop Alemany with 7,470 points. Bishop Alemany also scored 5,105 points in the Super Quiz out of a possible 6000 points. The top three super quiz players all from Bishop Alemany were Grace Vasiknanonte (885 points), Brian Padilla (855 points) and Katelyn Dion (830 points).
The Private Schools Academic Decathlon takes place over two weekends. Decathlon teams are comprised of students from all grade-point averages. Decathletes are challenged to use analytical skills, performance abilities and test-taking and writing aptitude in 10 subjects: Art, Economics, Essay, Interview, Language & Literature, Math, Music, Social Science, Speech and Super Quiz (Science). The themes of the decathlon vary from year to year, this year the theme was “The Great Depression”.
The state winner earns a trip to the U.S. Academic Decathlon slated for April 27-30 in Charlotte, NC.
